Stoney Bracelets
Since 2019, we have been crafting handmade gemstone bracelets for over 20,000 customers. Each stone is hand-selected in our own studio.

Lava stone is no ordinary rock. It is solidified magma — once molten rock from deep within the earth, now cooled into a porous, lightweight material with a rough, unpolished character. It is one of the oldest types of rock on earth, and that is precisely what makes it so special as a wearable stone. In this guide, you will learn everything about the origin, properties, and quality characteristics of lava stone — and why it is one of the most versatile stones in our lava stone collection.

How lava stone forms

Lava stone — also known as basalt or volcanic rock — forms when magma reaches the Earth's surface during a volcanic eruption. As soon as the glowing hot lava comes into contact with air or water, it solidifies rapidly. This rapid cooling is responsible for its characteristic porous structure: small air bubbles become trapped in the rock before it fully hardens.

The result is a stone that feels surprisingly light for its size. Where most gemstones are smooth and compact, lava stone has an irregular, almost organic surface. Each bead is different — and that's precisely the point. You're not wearing a mass-produced item, but a piece of geological history millions of years old.

Four characteristics that make lava stone unique

01
Porous structure

The small holes in lava stone make it exceptionally light. A lava stone bracelet is barely noticeable on your wrist — ideal if you're not used to wearing jewelry.

02
Absorbent capacity

Lava stone absorbs liquids. Drip essential oil onto the beads and you'll carry a subtle scent with you all day. No other stone can do this.

03
Unbreakable nature

Despite its relatively low Mohs hardness of 3-3.5, lava stone is tough and resistant to breakage. Its porous structure absorbs shocks instead of cracking.

04
Rough texture

No two lava stone beads are identical. The unpolished, matte surface gives a raw, masculine character that becomes stronger the longer you wear it.

Recognizing lava stone: real vs. fake

The popularity of lava stone has a downside: there are many imitations on the market. Cast ceramics, painted concrete, or even plastic beads are sold as "lava stone." Here's how to tell the difference.

Feature Real lava stone Imitation
Weight Surprisingly light for its size Too heavy (ceramic) or too light (plastic)
Surface Irregular, unique pores per bead Too uniform, repeating pattern
Color Natural black/dark gray, slight variation Perfectly uniform black or unnatural shades
Absorption Absorbs water and oil (drop test) Water rolls off
Temperature Feels cool to the touch initially Plastic feels warm immediately

At Stoney Bracelets, we manually select each lava stone bead. Beads with cracks, overly smooth surfaces, or color deviations are rejected. What remains are beads with the right porosity, the right weight, and a consistent matte black appearance.

Lava stone vs. other black stones

Black is the most worn color in men's jewelry — but not every black stone is the same. Lava stone distinguishes itself by its texture and weight. Below you can see how it compares to the other black stones in our assortment.

Stone Finish Weight Character
Lava stone Matte, porous, rough Very light Raw, organic, casual
Obsidian High-gloss, reflective Medium Sleek, modern, polished
Matte obsidian Satin matte, smooth Medium Understated, versatile
Onyx Deep gloss, even Medium-heavy Classic, formal, business
Hematite Metallic sheen Heavy Industrial, striking, tough

Lava stone is the stone for those who don't overthink what they wear — but wear it every day.

Combinations with lava stone

Lava stone is one of the easiest stones to combine. Its matte black, rough texture acts as a neutral base next to almost any other stone. These are the three combinations our customers order most frequently.

Tiger's Eye
Lava stone + Tiger's Eye Most popular combo

The golden-brown sheen of tiger's eye next to the matte black of lava stone creates a warm, earthy contrast. Suitable for both casual and business — and by far the most frequently ordered combination at Stoney.

Two black stones, totally different textures. Rough next to smooth, matte next to glossy. A subtle interplay that only stands out when someone looks closely — and that's precisely the idea.

Hematite
Lava Stone + Hematite Bold Accent

The metallic sheen of hematite brings an industrial accent next to the organic lava stone. A combination with an edgy feel — popular with men who love contrast.

Lava Stone Care

Lava stone is easy to maintain, but its porous structure does require attention. The holes in the beads trap dirt, sweat, and skin oil — which is inevitable with daily wear. With proper care, your bracelet will remain intact for years.

Cleaning in three steps

First, briefly rinse the bracelet under lukewarm water. Then, use a soft toothbrush with a drop of mild soap to gently brush the pores clean. Afterward, let the bracelet air dry for at least two hours — never on a heater or in direct sunlight, as rapid temperature changes can cause micro-cracks.

Using essential oil

One of the unique properties of lava stone is that it absorbs essential oil. Drip one to two drops onto one or two beads and let it soak in for ten minutes before putting on the bracelet. The scent will last for four to eight hours. Always use 100% pure oil — synthetic variants can discolour the stone.

Summary

Lava stone is the lightest, roughest, and most versatile black stone in our assortment. It's the stone you wear every day without thinking about it — and which gets better the longer you wear it. Its porous structure makes it unique: no other stone absorbs oil, feels so light, and has such a distinct character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is lava stone a real stone?+
Yes. Lava stone is solidified volcanic rock — magma that cooled rapidly on the Earth's surface after an eruption. Geologically, it is classified as basalt. It is one of the oldest and most common rock types on Earth.
Why is lava stone so light?+
Due to rapid cooling, small air bubbles are trapped within the rock. These pores make lava stone significantly lighter than compact stones like obsidian or onyx, while appearing to be the same size.
Can I drop essential oil on lava stone?+
Yes, that is one of the unique properties of lava stone. Its porous structure absorbs oil. Drip one to two drops of pure essential oil onto one or two beads, let it soak in for ten minutes, and you'll carry a subtle scent all day. Avoid synthetic oils — they can discolour the stone.
How do I recognize real lava stone?+
Real lava stone is surprisingly light for its size, has an irregular porous surface where no two beads are identical, and absorbs water. Drop a little water on the bead: real lava stone will soak it up. With imitations (ceramic or plastic), the water rolls off.
How do I clean my lava stone bracelet?+
Rinse the bracelet under lukewarm water and gently brush the pores clean with a soft toothbrush and mild soap. Then let it air dry for at least two hours. Do not use hot air or direct sunlight — rapid temperature changes can cause micro-cracks.
