Stoney Bracelets
Since 2019, we have been crafting handmade gemstone bracelets for 20,000+ customers. Each stone is hand-selected in our own studio.

Most active men take off their bracelets as soon as they walk into the gym because they don't know which stone can withstand movement and sweat. That's a shame, because with the right choice, you don't have to. A bracelet for athletes isn't about the prettiest stone, but about the hardest, smoothest, and least porous one. In our men's bracelets, active wearers almost always choose the same handful of stones, and below you'll find out exactly which ones and why.

Tiger's Eye and Obsidian: two of the hardest, most sweat-resistant stones for an active man.
First, honestly

A natural stone bracelet is not a sports watch and not protective gear. For contact sports, weight training with dumbbells, or anything involving hard impact: take it off. Stone can chip from a blow against metal, and an elastic cord stretches faster under constant strain. For the active lifestyle around it, the gym floor, running, hiking, and athleisure, it's perfectly made. We'd rather tell you upfront where the limit lies than have you wear it out unnecessarily.

Which stones can withstand sports and sweat

Two things determine whether a stone is suitable for movement: its hardness (scratch resistance, expressed on the Mohs scale) and whether the stone is porous. A hard, non-porous stone wipes clean after sweating and doesn't retain moisture or odor. A softer or porous stone requires more maintenance. Below are the stones most frequently worn by active customers, ranked honestly.

Stone Mohs Porous Sports advice
Tiger's Eye 6.5 - 7 No Best all-rounder, scratch-resistant and warm-toned
Hematite 5.5 - 6.5 No Sleek and smooth, wipes clean, low profile
Obsidian 5 - 5.5 No Smooth and non-porous, remove for hard impact
Lava Stone 5 - 6 Yes Light and breathable, rinse and dry after intense sweating
Moonstone 6 No Avoid: splits relatively easily with a knock

The common thread: tiger's eye and hematite are the safest choices because they are hard, smooth, and non-porous. Obsidian works fine as long as you take it off for heavy impact. Lava stone is popular for its light weight and breathable structure, but because it's porous, it absorbs sweat and odor, so after a strenuous workout, rinse it briefly with lukewarm water and let it dry.

Four sports situations, four stacks

Not every form of exercise requires the same bracelet. Weight training places different demands than a leisurely walk. These are the four combinations that active customers order most often, per situation.

Hematite + Matte Obsidian
Weight training & gymMost ordered

Low profile, smooth surface, no snag risk on equipment, and it wipes clean after sweating. The matte finish doesn't reflect under bright gym lights. Wear it snugly so it doesn't move during your sets.

Lava Stone + Hematite
Running & cardioLightest option

Lava stone is one of the lightest stones we carry, which limits swinging with each step. Combine with hematite for a sleek finish. Choose 6mm here instead of 8mm so the bracelet moves less.

Tiger's Eye + Obsidian
Outdoor & hikingScratch-resistant

The two hardest stones in the list, so least susceptible to rubbing against rocks, backpack straps, or trekking poles. The warm tone of tiger's eye naturally matches earthy outdoor clothing.

Athleisure & rest dayCasual

For the day you're not training but are dressed in sportswear. Deep black obsidian with matte lava stone matches joggers, a hoodie, or a black training jacket without being ostentatious.

Combining with your sports watch or smartwatch

Most active men wear a sports watch or smartwatch, and the bracelet needs to work with it rather than against it. The rule of thumb: during active sports, leave the heart rate sensor clear. Wear the bracelet on the other wrist, or if you want it on the same wrist, above the watch towards the elbow with two fingers of space between them.

Situation Recommended wrist Stone choice Note
Sports watch, active use Other wrist Hematite or obsidian Keep the heart rate sensor completely clear
Smartwatch, daily wear Same wrist, above the watch 6mm matte obsidian Two fingers of space, towards the elbow
No watch Stack of maximum two Lava stone and hematite Wear snugly so it doesn't swing

For the complete logic behind wrist, color, and watch strap, read our guide on combining watches and bracelets. If you mainly wear a smart version, our smartwatch with bracelet guide details what works for each model type.

The stacking rules for movement

Stacking looks good in an outfit, but when it comes to sports, less is more. The more bracelets, the more movement and noise, and the greater the chance of something rubbing or snagging. Stick to these three rules, and you'll barely notice your bracelet while exercising.

  • Maximum two bracelets during active sports, no more.
  • Choose 6mm over 8mm: a thinner bead moves less and sits closer to the wrist.
  • Wear it snugly, with about a finger's width of space, so it doesn't swing over your hand.

The size choice really makes a difference here. A bracelet that is too loose constantly moves and is more prone to damage. If you're unsure between the two bead thicknesses, our explanation of 6mm or 8mm will help you further. For the correct length, use the bracelet size chart.

"The man who never takes off his bracelet doesn't choose the prettiest stone, but the stone he forgets he's wearing because it simply moves with him."

What active customers order most

When we look at what men with an active lifestyle combine most often, a clear winner stands out: hematite with matte obsidian in 6mm. Sleek, dark, non-porous, and low-profile enough not to snag on anything. It's no coincidence that this is also the combination in our men's collection that is returned the least: it does exactly what an active wearer wants and stays out of sight until you want to show it off.

If you wear lava stone, you get a little extra. Its porous structure holds a drop of essential oil, so you can give your bracelet a fresh scent after showering. Do this sparingly and never right before exercising, as the oil can stain clothes.

In short

If you want a bracelet that keeps up with your active life, choose hematite or tiger's eye as a base: hard, smooth, and non-porous. Keep it to a maximum of two 6mm bracelets, wear them snugly, and leave your watch's heart rate sensor clear. Take it off for contact sports and heavy dumbbells. Do that, and you'll forget you're wearing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear a natural stone bracelet while exercising?+
Yes, for light to moderate activity such as running, hiking, cycling, or a relaxed gym session, it's perfectly fine, provided you choose a hard, non-porous stone like tiger's eye or hematite. However, do remove your bracelet for contact sports, weight training with dumbbells, or anything involving hard impact, as stone can chip and the elastic cord can stretch faster.
Which stone is most sweat-resistant?+
Tiger's eye and hematite are the most sweat-resistant because they are hard and non-porous, making them easy to wipe clean after sweating. Obsidian also works well. Lava stone is porous and absorbs sweat and odor, so after an intense workout, rinse it briefly with lukewarm water and let it dry.
Does the elastic cord stretch from sports?+
Under constant stress, any elastic cord will eventually stretch a bit; that's part of it. You can limit this by wearing the bracelet snugly and combining no more than two bracelets during sports. If the cord stretches over time, it can be replaced so the stones are retained.
Is 6mm or 8mm better for sports?+
For sports, we recommend 6mm. A thinner bead moves less, sits closer to the wrist, and is lighter, so you barely feel the bracelet during movement. 8mm makes a stronger statement for daily wear but moves more during exercise.
Can I wear my bracelet on the same wrist as my sports watch?+
You can, but wear the bracelet above the watch towards your elbow, with about two fingers' width of space between them, so the heart rate sensor remains clear. During active sports, it's cleaner to wear the bracelet on the other wrist so your watch continues to measure reliably.
