Stoney Bracelets
Since 2019, we have been crafting handmade gemstone bracelets for over 20,000 customers. Each stone is hand-selected in our own studio in Rosmalen.
Amethyst is purple. Not pastel, not dull — a deep, saturated violet that picks up the light and reflects it. What makes an amethyst bracelet wear differently from any other gemstone? The combination of high hardness (Mohs 7), a color that works for both men and women, and a luster that truly blossoms in natural light. In this guide: what distinguishes the stone, how to combine it, and which amethyst bracelets from our collection are the strongest.
Our amethyst in natural light — that's where the violet truly comes to life.
What distinguishes amethyst from other gemstones
Amethyst is quartz. This places it in the same mineral family as rose quartz and rock crystal, but its purple color makes it immediately recognizable. This violet color is formed by traces of iron in the crystal lattice, combined with natural radiation during its geological formation. No two beads have exactly the same shade — some tend towards deep royal, others lighter and almost lavender. At Stoney, we select for color saturation and clarity: beads that remain translucent in light without appearing dull.

Four characteristics that make an amethyst bracelet unique
01
Hard enough for daily wear
With a Mohs hardness of 7, amethyst is above most everyday stones. It doesn't scratch easily and doesn't show visible wear with normal use. One of the few gemstones you can truly wear every day.
02
Color that is not uniform
Real amethyst has color variation. Some beads darker, some lighter — so-called zoning. Perfectly uniform amethyst is almost always glass or synthetic. This difference is what our customers recognize on the wrist.
03
Works for men and women
Purple is one of the rare colors that doesn't belong to a single gender. Deep violet appears businesslike and stylish on men, while lighter lavender works more softly on women. Our amethyst is approximately 50/50 for both groups.
04
Light-sensitive — handle with care
Amethyst can slowly fade with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or UV lamps. Daily wear is not a problem; weeks on a sunny windowsill are. Store in a box or pouch.
Three strong combinations with amethyst
Amethyst is not a background stone, but also not as dominant as, for example, malachite. It combines more as a quiet main player — deep in color, yet visually accessible. These are the three stacks we most often see among customers.
AmethystMatte Obsidian
Amethyst + Matte Obsidian
Business · Masculine
Deep black as a resting point next to the violet. Works great with a shirt or suit, without the purple becoming too prominent. Our most popular amethyst stack for men.
The metallic silver-grey of hematite catches the light differently than the transparent violet of amethyst. Subtle contrast with an editorial look, especially beautiful next to a silver or steel watch.
A three-part stack where amethyst carries the central violet, obsidian forms the anchor, and tiger eye adds warmth. For those who want more presence than a single loose bracelet provides.
Amethyst + obsidian + gold tiger eye — a three-piece stack that adds character without screaming.
How an amethyst bracelet wears
Amethyst works best as an anchor point in a small stack: one amethyst, one or two neutral stones next to it. For men, we most often combine it under the sleeve — the violet flashes through as the cuff moves, without becoming overly conspicuous. For women, amethyst works more freely: a single bracelet on the wrist next to a delicate necklace or rings has enough character to be worn alone. For the choice between 6mm and 8mm: narrower (6mm) reads as more business-like and fits under a watch; 8mm gives the violet more room to show. Our complete size guide helps if you're in doubt.
"Amethyst is one of the few stones that works equally well with a dress shirt or a T-shirt — that makes it incredibly versatile."

Combining with your watch
The color of your watch determines whether amethyst clicks or clashes. Silver, steel, and white gold are the natural matches — the cool tones enhance the violet. With yellow gold, tension arises: not impossible, but the eye seeks calm, which is missing. If you still want to combine gold with a purple stone, choose tiger's eye or jasper as an intermediate stone between the gold and the amethyst.

Strong — cool tones enhance the violet
White gold
Strong — clean editorial look
Rose gold
Works — only with lighter amethyst (lavender)
Yellow gold
Avoid — color clash, use intermediate stone
Black / DLC
Strong — deep black accentuates the violet
Care in four rules
Do not store in direct sunlight. Lay flat in a soft bag or box, away from the windowsill.
Daily wear is fine — Mohs 7 is hard enough for normal use.
Take off the bracelet before showering, swimming, and washing hands. Not because of the amethyst itself, but the elastic wears out faster with continuous wetting.
Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. No cleaning agents, no ultrasonic bath.
Amethyst + hematite — cool, editorial, and suitable for those who want subtle wear.
In short
Choose an amethyst bracelet if you want a stone that isn't gender-specific, is hard enough for daily wear, and truly blossoms in light. Combine with matte obsidian for business, hematite for an editorial look, or a three-piece stack with obsidian and tiger's eye for presence. Only limitation: keep out of direct sunlight.

The deepest violet we find
Hand-selected for color saturation and clarity. Available in 6mm and 8mm, with the stones that make it stand out.
What is the difference between real amethyst and glass?+
Real amethyst has color variation — darker and lighter zones within a single bead, and differences between beads. Dyed glass is uniform and flat. Additionally, amethyst with Mohs 7 is cool to the touch and heavier than glass or plastic of the same volume. Our amethyst is selected for color saturation and clarity.
Can a man wear an amethyst bracelet?+
Yes, and we see this about as often as with women. Deep violet does not read as feminine, provided the stack remains calm — combine with matte obsidian, hematite or obsidian+tiger's eye for a masculine look. Lighter lavender-purple is softer and better suits a feminine style.
How do I care for an amethyst bracelet?+
Three rules: store out of direct sunlight (UV can fade the violet), take it off before showering and swimming so the elastic doesn't wear out faster, and wipe with a dry cloth. No cleaning agents or ultrasonic bath. With this routine, the color will remain intact for years.
Does amethyst fit better in 6mm or 8mm?+
Both work. 6mm reads as more business-like and fits under a watch or shirt. 8mm gives the violet more room to show and is more visible when stacked. For narrower wrists or more subtle looks: 6mm. For sturdier wrists or a statement: 8mm.
Which stones go best with amethyst?+
Three strong combinations: matte obsidian for a business and masculine look, hematite for an editorial metallic look, and a three-piece stack with obsidian and tiger's eye for presence. Avoid warm golden-brown stones directly next to amethyst without an intermediate color — the color contrast becomes too great.
Does amethyst really fade in sunlight?+
Yes, but only with prolonged, direct exposure. A day out in the sun does nothing. Weeks on a sunny windowsill can slightly weaken the violet. Therefore, store the bracelet flat in a box or pouch when not wearing it.
