What do you give at Christmas to someone you see every day? The hard part about a gift for your boyfriend isn't that you don't know him, but that you know him too well: a surprise is almost impossible, and anything he really wants he has usually already bought. A natural stone bracelet does work in this case, because the value isn't in the surprise but in the choice itself. Every stone carries a centuries-old story, and which stone you pick says something about how you see him. Our Christmas gift collection has the full overview; below is the meaning behind it.

Two hands holding each other, both with dark natural stone bracelets on the wrist, against a light grey background
Two wrists, two bands. Most couples don't choose the same stone, but they do choose the same family.

Why people give each other stones

Long before a stone became jewellery, it was a sign. In Mesopotamia and Egypt certain stones were worn only by those who held an office. In the Roman legions a soldier was given a stone that matched what was expected of him. In Mesoamerica volcanic glass was used for mirrors, because you saw yourself darkly in it. None of those traditions were about energy or healing. They were about assigning meaning: this stands for something, and by wearing it you carry that with you.

That's exactly why a stone lands differently as a gift than a gadget. You're not giving a function, you're giving a choice. And with a boyfriend that choice is visible: he knows you picked it, and after a week he knows why too.

The idea behind a duo A duo isn't a set with the same thing in it twice. It works best when the two bands belong together without being identical: the same dark base, a different finish, or two stones that have met as a pair for centuries. That's what the rest of this page is about.

The meaning per stone, as handed down

Below are five stones we sell most for men, with the tradition they come from and the type of man they're chosen for in practice. For the wider background, read our explanation of the meaning of natural stone bracelets.

Lapis Lazuli Truth
Tradition In ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, lapis lazuli was reserved for those who spoke on behalf of someone else: priests, advisers, the pharaoh. The stone stood for the word that holds true.
For whom The man who thinks first and talks after. Deep blue with golden flecks, the stone in our range that stands out most without being loud. From 30 euros in 6mm and 35 euros in 8mm.
Obsidian Mirror
Tradition Obsidian is solidified volcanic glass. In Mesoamerica it was polished into mirrors, precisely because you see yourself darkly in it. Hence the association with self-knowledge and guarding boundaries.
For whom The man who shows little and is good at it. Polished obsidian is 35 euros, the matte variant 39 euros. See the obsidian bracelets.
Hematite Steadfastness
Tradition The name comes from the Greek haima, blood, because the stone's powder turns red. Hematite is iron oxide and in antiquity was linked to the warrior who holds his ground.
For whom The man you call when something goes wrong. Metallic grey, heavy in the hand, fits under any shirt. 28 euros in 6mm, 30 euros in 8mm.
Gold Tiger Eye Vigilance
Tradition Roman soldiers are said to have worn tiger eye to stay sharp. The streak of light that moves with you is called chatoyancy and is the reason the stone has always been associated with the eye.
For whom The man who sees things coming. Golden brown, warm, the most outspoken choice of this row. 40 euros in both 6mm and 8mm, in the tiger eye bracelets.
Lava Stone Foundation
Tradition Lava stone is magma that has cooled. Among volcanic peoples it stood for the ground everything else is built on: first the rock, then the rest.
For whom The man who doesn't wear a bracelet yet. Matte black, porous, and at 28 euros in 6mm and 30 euros in 8mm the most chosen first band. One of our most ordered bracelets.
How we mean this

We present this as cultural background, not as a proven effect. A stone does nothing for your health, your concentration or your relationship. What it does is capture a choice: you picked this one, for a reason, and you can explain that reason. That's exactly enough for a gift.

Two bands that belong together

If you're looking for a Christmas gift for your boyfriend and thinking of wearing one yourself, look at what people actually order together. The three combinations below come from our own order data of recent months, not from a style rule. The ready-made versions are in the sets collection.

Lava
Matte Moon
Lava Stone and Matte Moon Most often ordered together

Of all the combinations in our shop, these are the two most often found in the same order. Matte black next to matte off-white: maximum contrast, no shine, and so both still wearable on an ordinary workday. As a duo it works because the bands clearly come from the same corner without anyone seeing you bought them together. Together 65 euros in 8mm.

Lava stone bracelets
Matte
Obsidian
Matte and polished obsidian The same stone

This is the combination for anyone who likes the idea of a couples bracelet but doesn't want to wear anything matching. It's literally the same stone in two finishes: one swallows light, the other reflects it. Side by side on two different wrists nobody notices, and that's usually exactly the point. Together 74 euros in 8mm.

Obsidian bracelets
Lapis
Moon
Lapis Lazuli and Moon Colour and calm

The only one of the three with real colour. Deep blue next to light grey-white, a combination that comes back often in our orders and works best in practice when one wrist wears the blue and the other the light one. Traditionally the word next to calm, which isn't a bad split for a couple. Together 71 euros in 8mm.

Two bands don't need to look alike. They just shouldn't fight each other.

What do you want it to say?

In the end most people don't choose on colour but on what they mean. Pick what comes closest below.

Lava Stone and Matte Moon

Two matte stones, no shine, no message to the outside world. Lava stone traditionally stands for the foundation and Moon for the calm side of it. This is also the combination most often ordered together, which shows it simply wears comfortably in practice.

Obsidian, matte or polished

The mirror stone. If you want to give something about boundaries and holding your own, obsidian is the most direct choice. Matte and polished obsidian together are also the subtlest way to make two bands belong together.

Lapis Lazuli or Gold Tiger Eye

Lapis lazuli when it's about the right word, gold tiger eye when it's about staying sharp. Both more outspoken than the rest of this row and both visible in daylight, so choose these if he doesn't mind people looking.

What it costs and what you get

A gift for a partner is usually higher in amount than a gift for a colleague, but lower than what you'd spend on a joint purchase. Below are the three levels our orders fall into in practice.

Level What you get for it Stones in this range
28 to 35 euros A single bracelet, delivered in the gift box. Most people buying from us for the first time are here. Lava stone 30, hematite 30, marble 32, obsidian 35, lapis lazuli 35, matte moon 35
36 to 50 euros A single bracelet from the top of the range, or a stone with an optical effect that isn't in every bead. Moon 36, multicolor tiger eye 37, matte obsidian 39, gold tiger eye 40, red tiger eye 43, black labradorite 50
57 to 109 euros A set of two or three matched bands, or a necklace. This is the level where it really feels like a gift. Sets from 57, Superior and Silver+ with 925 sterling silver 59, necklaces 70

You need to worry less about size than you think. We work with fixed sizes, Small to X-Large in 8mm and Small to Large in 6mm, and for an adult man Large in 8mm is by far the most chosen combination. Exchanging sizes is free. Want to get it exactly right anyway? The method is in our size chart, and we explain the difference between the two bead thicknesses in 6mm or 8mm.

Every bracelet is strung by hand and shipped in a gift box. We don't engrave.

With a duo we lay the two bands side by side before they go into the box. If one stone overpowers the other, we take one out and start again.

From our atelier

What you don't get from us

We don't engrave, so a name or date in the band isn't an option. With us, personalisation is in the choice of stone, not in text. We also don't make bracelets to a given wrist circumference: the sizes are fixed. And we don't carry green jade, onyx or red lava stone, three stones often searched for around the holidays. If you're looking for those specifically, we're not the right place, and we'd rather say so now than after your order.

What you do get: a hand-strung bracelet from our own atelier, shipped in a matte black gift box with a cushion and care card, and free exchanges if the stone or size turns out not to be right. Looking for something in the same direction but for a friend rather than a partner? Take a look at our friendship bracelets for men.

Under a sleeve or above a cuff: with 8mm you always see the band, with 6mm only when he wants you to.

Two wrists, one choice

If you don't know where to start: take lava stone or obsidian. Both dark, both under forty euros, both a stone nobody finds odd on someone who has never worn a bracelet. Want to wear one yourself? Choose the matte and the polished obsidian, or lava stone next to matte moon. And if you want it to really be about something, lapis lazuli is the stone with the longest story of the whole row.

What it comes down to

Choose the stone on what you want to say, not on what looks best. For a first bracelet, lava stone or obsidian in 8mm is the safest choice; for a duo, matte next to polished obsidian works most subtly; and if you want something more outspoken, you end up at lapis lazuli or gold tiger eye. Got the size wrong? No problem, exchanges cost nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Which stone suits a boyfriend who has never worn a bracelet?+
Lava stone or obsidian. Both matte or dark, both neutral enough to wear with any outfit, and both under forty euros. Lava stone costs 30 euros in 8mm and obsidian 35 euros. If he wants it completely low-key, stick to 6mm; then the band barely shows under a sleeve.
Isn't a couples bracelet a bit much?+
That depends on how you put it together. Two identical bracelets are indeed emphatic. What works best in practice is the same stone in two finishes, for example matte and polished obsidian, or two stones from the same dark family. Then it belongs together without anyone else noticing.
Can I have his name or our date put in the bracelet?+
No, we don't engrave. With us the personal side is in the choice of stone and the meaning that goes with it. That's also why we mention the tradition for each stone: you can explain why you picked that one.
What if I don't know his wrist size?+
We work with fixed sizes: Small to X-Large in 8mm and Small to Large in 6mm. For an adult man, Large in 8mm is the most chosen size. Exchanging sizes is free, so a wrong estimate costs you nothing but a few days. Do keep the box until after the holidays.
Do the stones really do something, or is that marketing?+
We present the meanings as cultural background and not as a proven effect. A stone has no demonstrable effect on your health, your mood or your relationship. What is true is that these meanings are centuries old and give a gift something to talk about.
Will it arrive in time for Christmas?+
Orders within the Netherlands normally reach you within a few working days. Shipping is free from 50 euros within the Netherlands and from 70 euros to Belgium, Germany and Austria. In December, do order a week earlier than you otherwise would, because carriers get busier.
