Carnelian is not a rare gemstone, but a variety of chalcedony: microcrystalline quartz, the same stone family as agate and jasper. This origin explains two things. The stone is durable enough for daily wear, and the color is always natural and slightly variable, never a uniform dye color. The warm orange to deep red tone is created by fine iron oxide particles in the quartz.
The characteristic that distinguishes carnelian from a matte red stone like red jasper is its translucency.
